Project Name
Accessible American Road
The Accessible American Road leads to accessible service stations for motorists with disabilities.
This project will enable a person with a disability to "Google" not only a map to their destination but also the accessible fuel stops that are available in the areas they are traveling. "The Accessible American Road" is a tentative name. Our team will probably come up with a better name.
People with disabilities who drive accessible cars and vans often have trouble getting fuel because most outlets are self-service. For people with disabilities, such as wheelchair users, it is often difficult or impossible to use the gas pumps. Many people experience this problem daily. There are few full-service stations and even fewer self-service outlets that have the personnel to assist the disabled motorist.
Although a driver may have acquired the necessary adaptive driving controls and has an accessible vehicle, the lack of accommodations at service stations and convenient stores greatly retards their independence. In one's own area, a driver is aware of the limited number of full-service outlets and the problem is even greater when they are traveling long distances in unfamiliar areas.
We propose that motorists with disabilities (and other interested parties) united, network and develop a website that has a national listing of full-service stations and stores. People from across the country will be asked to submit information from their areas - data to be posted on our website and made available to other travelers with disabilities. There will be links on this website to all states with maps, directions and information about the locations, store hours, accommodations and accessibility of outlets in that area.
Plan
We will contact people with disabilities, their friends, families, support groups and others by using the internet, emails, chat boards and word-of-mouth in recruiting our team and creating this project. It will be a big job and will require a lot of work by many people from across the country. The team will include people with and without disabilities, a cross-section of people from any and all backgrounds who agree on and are dedicated to addressing this need and creating a solution using a lil' ol' tool called the Internet.
