Project Report
JCIL Portable Wheelchair Ramp

February 25, 2010

Objective # 1:

To develop a prefabricated, modular wheelchair ramp system that can be quickly assembled on-site and can be disassembled when no longer needed or when the consumer relocates. Following much trial and error with several ideas, we worked on the design we thought most feasible.

Results:

After meeting with and getting ideas from contractors carpenters, engineers, educators, students and people with disabilities, our primary objective was achieved. It has three basic detachable sections - landings, ramps and rails. This idea went from the drawing boart to a construction paper model to the actual construction. The ramps snap onto the landing. The landing can rest on blocks or have 4 jacks for leveling. The hand rails are connected to the landing and ramps like sideboards on a wagon. The ramp can be used both outdoors and indoors for access to a stage or other elevated area. Example are attached and are illustrated here: http://www.jcilnow.net/quickramp.html

Objective # 2:

To provide self-employment opportunities to people with disabilities who would like to build and install wheelchair ramps.

Results:

People with disabilities were our best source of suggestions and ideas because of their experience and common interest. On our radio programs and at our focus group meetings we met with consumers, listening to suggestions, sharing ideas and discussing related disability topics. That is when the project began taking shape. One consumer helped develop the portable ramp by working with us and experimenting as he learned the trade. He is now self-employed in ramp building business.

Comments:

We knew our portable ramp project was a big undertaking for us but, realizing the need and with the Coalition's assistance, we decided to tackle it. It was one of our more exciting and more difficult projects. Collaborating with varied groups, it was both a training and a learning experience. We also feel it was a productive experience although we are not completely satisfied with the outcome. For this reason we have decided to continue the project with improvements being our objective.

This is the idea we developed, the QuickRamp -
A wheelchair ramp that can be set up in a hurry.

With a large base serving as a level landing, this design would allow a 90 degree turn.

This is an idea we first made with construction paper. The ramps snap onto the landing. The landing can rest on blocks or have 4 jacks for leveling. The hand rails are connected to the landing and ramps like sideboards on a wagon. If you have any suggestions call 731 668-2211
