JCIL PROGRAMS & SERVICES
Information & Referral
Information about and referral to community services that are available to assist individuals in the attainment of independent living.
Peer Counseling and Support
This involves examining and discussing issues and concerns and cross-disability consultation to persons with all levels of disabilities, plus a listing of area support groups and agencies.
Advocacy and Self-Advocacy
This can be assistance with personal, community and systems advocacy or empowering individuals to have increased access to the community by breaking down barriers and through systems change.
Skills Training
To maintain independence, people must learn new skills to accomplish formerly routine tasks. New skills necessary may range from new ways to button a shirt, learning to use adaptive equipment, new ways to communicate, new methods of mobility, and even learning skills to hire, fire, and manage a Personal Attendant who may be necessary to assist in daily tasks.
The 5th Core Service
Nursing Home Transition assist people in relocating from nursing homes and other institutions into their own community.
JCIL DEAF & HARD-OF-HEARING SERVICES
JCIL Deaf Services include Interpreting, Referrals, Advocacy, and American Sign Language Classes. Other services include Public Awareness Activities, Outreach, Technical Assistance to Employees and Individuals, Client Assistance, Peer Counseling, Support Groups, Workshops and Seminars. Nursing Home Transition assisting people in relocating from nursing homes and other institutions into their own community. .
JCIL Arts and Recreation Programs
These programs encourage individuals to use and advance their abilities in sports, art, music and other activities with annual fishing events, art exhibits and the JCIL Creative Corner contest.
Emergency Preparedness
This program is a direct effort to locate and recognize individuals with disabilities that may require special attention in emergency situations.
The Jackson Center for Independent Living, in cooperation with the Emergency Management Agencies of West Tennessee, is offering individuals with disabilities an opportunity to report your need for special assistance in case of a disaster affecting the area in which you live. Emergency Preparedness Forms are available.
The Home Sweet Home Program
This program is actually three programs that benefit people in the areas we serve who are in need of homes, home modifications and durable medical equipment and assistive devices.

Home Ownership Initiative
JCIL serves individuals with disabilities, local banks and community housing providers in eliminating barriers as well as shaping public policy in homeownership. Our trained homebuyer education counselors provide credit counseling and budgeting classes to our consumers. This year we exceeded our goal by assisting twelve individuals in becoming homeowners.

Home Modifications
JCIL realizes the importance of an accessible home to the consumer. If a consumer cannot get out of the house little opportunity awaits them. These modifications enable consumers to live more independently in their own homes rather than a nursing home or institution and also enable consumers to access community activities as well as educational and vocational opportunities.
3.
Equipment Loaner Program
JCIL maintains a small collection of computers and medical equipment, which is loaned free of charge for a specified period of time. JCIL is not responsible for subsequent repairs and asks that the equipment be returned in the same condition that it was received.
