CONSUMER'S HOME DESTROYED

Christy Davis sits near the wheelchair ramp leading to the place her home used to be. Friends and family joined together at the site to give support to Davis, a paraplegic who lost both her independence and her possessions with the tornadoes that wreaked havoc on several homes south of Dyersburg on Tuesday.

The storms that raged through the area on Tuesday took two swipes at the Halls home of Christy Davis before carrying it hundreds of feet from its foundation and splintering it into the gully beyond.

"Just before (the tornado hit,) high winds uprooted a tree and damaged my bathroom ceiling," said Davis, who received a call from her brother, David Davis of Halls, around noon on Tuesday telling her that winds had created a hole in the roof of her mobile home. "I was at the hospital because a friend of mine had had a baby. I came home long enough to get some clothes and go to my sister's."

Davis's sister, Donna Lents of Halls, said that family members worked quickly to cover the hole in the roof with plastic because they knew that rain was coming. Davis made arrangements to stay at the Lents home and attend her niece's basketball game that evening.

"About 45 minutes later, my brother called and told me my house was gone," said Davis. "I don't have anything anymore."

The wheelchair ramp that led to the front of Davis's home stands alone, a stark reminder of where her front door used to be. The house, now torn in two, was blown several hundred feet away from the porch, littering the backyard with the debris of her possessions.
