Accessible Kitchen Appliances

Most dishwashers come with easy to use push button controls and dials in the front. Dishwashers in general are fairly accessible appliances but not for everyone.

Dishwashers are usually at least 34" high and will fit beneath a standard 36" high counter. Unfortunately, standards kitchen appliances are too high for most wheelchair users.

On the other hand, some people are tall and have trouble bending. In these cases the person needs a higher dishwasher installed, (and often will have higher counters as well). This approach will make their experience in their kitchens a whole lot less painful—and such accommodations for the installation of kitchen appliances is sometimes even doctor recommended.

Wheelchairs users most often find it easier and more accessible to have lower kitchen counters and appliances. Many chair users have trouble opening the pull down door on dishwashers. The door and the drawer (made as one unit) slide out on this Whirlpool dishwasher made in Jackson, Tennessee.

The people at Whirlpool, working with the JCIL staff, designed this model to be convenient for chair users.
